When the US raised tariffs on imported motorcycles over 700 cc in 1983, Honda shrank the Shadow 750's bore to create the 694 cc VT700C for the American market. It kept the liquid-cooled, three-valve, twin-plug 45-degree V-twin with offset crankpins, six-speed gearbox and shaft drive. The 1986 update brought a new, lower and longer chassis with a single front disc, five-spoke wheels and a camshaft tuned for low-rpm pull, and production ended after 1987.
